A ground handler at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport suffered injuries after he fell off a ladder when lightning struck the airport Tuesday night.

Manila International Airport Authority general manager Ed Monreal said the worker forgot the protocol to halt all ramp operations during a red lightning alert.

The MIAA issued a red lightning alert at the NAIA from 6:53 p.m. to 7:28 p.m. on Tuesday. The alert is a safety measure to prevent incidents when lightning is prevalent in the vicinity.

Based on MIAA records, Joel Arejola of Macroasia fell off a ladder while detaching a ground power unit from an aircraft around 6:58 p.m.

When checked, Arejola’s vital signs were normal and he didn’t have any burns, but abrasions were visible on his leg, according to MIAA.

Earlier, MIAA said the continued movement of ground personnel was discouraged during lightning alert because of the possibility of the current traveling across the pavement before it finally discharged on the ground.
